114. Why Do Things Like This Happen to Me?

“Next!” called the barista.

“I’ll have a tall latte, please,” I announced.
The girl motioned to the customer behind me.  I started to interrupt and say that it was my turn, but when I happened to glance at the mirror behind the counter, I noticed I wasn’t there.

Great, I thought, third time this week.  It sucks being invisible.
When I first told Mike about it, he said it was impossible.  But then he was with me last time it happened.

“Don’t worry, babe,” he’d consoled me, “I’ve got your back.”
Tough to do when you can’t see it.

  1. I used to say Time travel would be the superpower I wanted, screw flying or being invisible, I wanted to be able to go forward, back, etc.

I liked this because it was a piece of real life, sure it sounds so amazing to be invisible, but sometimes it's really a pita. *wink*

    Liked !!!

  2. Haha! I love the ho-hum response to being invisible. Oh, not again...

I could imagine this being extended, but it works wonderfully as a short story, too. :)

  3. Invisibility... I hate when that happens. I like the way you crafted this so that the character was so nonchalant about being invisible. "... third time this week."

when I noticed I wasn't there. Love it. You haven't turned fifty, have you?
Gotta love a guy who has a back he can't even see!

  5. I, too, love the non-chalant attitude. Sometimes when I'm talking and no one is listening, I ask them if they see and hear me. I know this feeling. Great humor!!!

  6. I love that it seems like it's a spontaneous and intermittent condition. A superpower, and a super-irritating problem at the same time! (Especially if it interferes with your latte...)

  7. Now invisibility would come in handy, say, in the case of an IRS audit!

  8. Are they both dead and don't know it yet? Does she have an invisibility mutation ? Seems to have endless possibilities.

  9. Love the voice of this. I chuckled imagining the conversation with Mike: "Honey, my 'check engine' light came on. Oh, and I keep disappearing." Mike has a fantastic excuse for not noticing her new haircut, too. :)

    Good stuff!

  10. I was going with vampire at first, but then I got the invisibility. Nice. Of all the superpowers I've daydreamed about having, invisibility seems like the one that'd be the most trouble with the least payoff.
